The truth about abortion, birth control, & breast cancer risks

Dear friend,

Most of us know someone, a family member or a friend, who had or has breast cancer. Many of us know someone who died a painful and premature death because of it. While millions of dollars are spent every year to promote breast cancer awareness and encourage prevention and research, very little is done to share the truth about how much hormonal contraceptives increase the risk of breast cancer, especially for young women who are on it before their first pregnancy.

It is frustrating to think that so much suffering could be avoided with proper warning about these risks. That’s why we continue writing about it and are sharing this week’s article from science journalist Christina Bennett, who clarifies the data and mechanisms behind these tragic occurrences.

On a positive note, the way that a woman’s breasts start developing in the womb and mature to a complex and beautiful anatomy is quite fascinating. I learned a lot about it by reading Cassondra Moriarty’s fifth edition of our “Reasons Women Need Periods” series. Cassie intelligently demonstrates how ovulation plays a key role in the maturation process of the breast during the years of puberty, while using the Pill—which prevents ovulation—may have some serious, unexpected consequences.

All this is to say that it is so important to follow the action call below, and invite your family and friends to watch and read more about the special topic we’re launching during the coming days: Helping women get off the Pill and other harmful contraceptive methods.

Be well,

Reasons Women Need Periods: Breast Health

When you hear the term “reproductive organs” you are most likely to think about the parts on the lower half of your body. But the mammary glands in breast tissue are an essential reproductive organ as well. Breast tissue development happens in 3 distinct phases: first in the womb, second during puberty, and third during pregnancy and lactation. While we will cover all three of these developmental phases in this article, the second phase (the pubertal phase) in particular provides us with yet another important biological reason why women need their periods.
