Some unusual options for painful or heavy periods (some are riskier than others)

Dear friend,

For too long, the only options to treat painful periods have been less-than-ideal: hormonal birth control (which comes with a host of serious side effects, and fails to address the underlying cause of painful or heavy periods) or hysterectomies (which render women permanently infertile and can come with their own set of complications). We write regularly on better options like lifestyle changes and restorative reproductive treatments that address the root cause of cycle-related issues. Some women may also be drawn towards considering lesser-known treatments like endometrial ablation, or alternative therapies like acupuncture.

This week, science writer Christina Bennett describes endometrial ablation for us, including the serious risks that accompany this surgical procedure, about which many women are sadly uninformed. And in her debut article for Natural Womanhood, registered nurse and fertility awareness educator Morganne Skinner, discusses the possible benefits of acupuncture for addressing the root cause(s) of painful periods, (like inflammation).

Natural Womanhood is sounding the alarm that insurance coverage for fertility awareness method (FAM) instruction is under attack by the current Administration’s HHS, which could reduce women’s access to beneficial restorative reproductive medical services. I was recently interviewed by The National Catholic Register on this important issue, and by Teresa Tomeo on her radio show, Catholic Connection, to address the recent hit piece Mother Jones published about us (which falsely claimed we want to “take away birth control”). We will be writing more about these topics at NW and in other outlets in the coming weeks. You can read details about the lawsuit seeking to prevent the rescinding of FAM instruction coverage, here.

Action call this week: Watch and share our recent live webcast with Dr. Marguerite Duane of FACTS with anyone you know who is considering a FAM (YouTube link here and below)—and stay tuned for next week’s debut of our June Topic of the Month: Choosing a FAM!

Wishing you all the best,

From the Desk of our CEO:

We closed our Spring online fundraiser last week, and I would like to thank everyone who was able and took the time to send a gift. While we ended below the goal, we were greatly encouraged by the support we received and by the comments we heard. We also reached hundreds of people about the dangers of the abortion pill. It is an honor and a joy to be able to serve you and all the women and couples who need to hear the truth about authentic women’s health. Thank you form the bottom of our hearts.

Warm regards,

Gerard Migeon, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the Team at Natural Womanhood
Can acupuncture relieve your endometriosis-related period pain?

I initially came to acupuncture searching for relief from endometriosis and period pain, and walked away with an entire perspective shift.

Considering endometrial ablation to fix heavy periods? Read this first

For many women with heavy menstrual bleeding like myself, a surgical procedure called endometrial ablation may be recommended, especially when medication (such as hormonal contraception, which stops ovulation and consequent menstruation) fails to provide relief or becomes otherwise intolerable. However, as this article will discuss, the significant risks of endometrial ablation may not be worth the temporary relief from heavy bleeding that it might provide.
