The regular monthly release of an egg is a sign that your hormones are at optimal levels and, for the most part, balanced. Not ovulating (anovulation)\u2013although you still might bleed each month\u2013often means that something is awry. Here is what you need to know about delayed ovulation or anovulation, and ways that can help fix these common cycle issues and naturally induce ovulation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-signs-of-anovulation\"><span id=\"what-are-the-signs-of-anovulation\">What are the signs of anovulation?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The classic anovulatory woman has <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/how-to-fix-your-irregular-periods-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">irregular periods<\/a>, long cycles, or even no cycle at all. Indeed, 20% of anovulatory women are amenorrheic, lacking periods; this is common, for example, while <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/natural-family-planning\/breastfeeding-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">breastfeeding<\/a>. A woman with anovulatory cycles may also have signs of polycystic ovary syndrome (<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/topic\/cycle-dysfunctions\/cysts-pcos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PCOS<\/a>), a condition in which cysts (unruptured follicles) build up in the ovary. However, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5974145\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2018 article<\/a> published in the journal <em>Frontiers in Public Health <\/em>discussed that having ostensibly &#8220;regular&#8221; menstrual cycles, i.e., with bleeds that seem to happen a consistent number of days apart, does not necessarily mean that a woman is ovulating during those cycles [2].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect you may not be ovulating, charting the signs of ovulation with a fertility awareness method (FAM) may help you (and your healthcare provider) in your search for answers. Ovulation is important for good health; anovulation can mean that there are imbalances in estrogen and progesterone levels that could increase your risk of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/reasons-women-need-periods-you-need-a-period-the-role-of-the-menstrual-cycle-in-bone-health-development-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bone loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (osteoporosis), early<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/reasons-women-need-periods-estrogen-progesterone-heart-health-heart-disease-risk-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attack<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and even breast cancer. There really are so many reasons that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/reasons-you-need-a-period-the-role-of-the-menstrual-cycle-in-the-immune-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women actually need to ovulate and have periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-signs-of-ovulation\"><span id=\"what-are-the-signs-of-ovulation\">What are the signs of ovulation?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So we&#8217;ve established that ovulating is important, but how do you know if you\u2019re actually ovulating? There\u2019s lots written on the Internet on this topic, but it\u2019s not always accurate. Best practices for predicting ovulation without the help of a medical doctor include:<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/learn\/charting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cervical fluid and\/or basal body temperature and confirming a \u201cpeak day\u201d with the help of a qualified fertility awareness method (FAM) instructor, testing for a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), and documenting<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/charting-and-natural-remedies-for-mittelschmerz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mittelschmerz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\/or breast pain. We encourage women to learn<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/learn\/natural-birth-control-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a proven fertility awareness method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or method of Natural Family Planning, or Fertility Awareness-Based Method) with an instructor who can help them learn to read their unique charts\u2013even if they\u2019re going to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/new-cycle-tracking-app-study-risks-misleading-many\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use an app to predict ovulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-how-do-you-know-if-you-ve-actually-ovulated\"><span id=\"but-how-do-you-know-if-youve-actually-ovulated\">But how do you know if you\u2019ve <i>actually<\/i> ovulated?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While predicting ovulation is vital when trying to conceive or tracking your cycle, confirming that you did in fact ovulate is just as important\u2014especially after we\u2019ve discussed the possibility of anovulatory cycles! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how can you confirm ovulation? By tracking progesterone.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progesterone is the hormone produced by the empty follicle (or corpus luteum) after ovulation occurs. It\u2019s progesterone that is responsible for stabilizing the uterine lining and preparing it to receive an embryo. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proovtest.com\/blogs\/blog\/progesterone-power\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progesterone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> must stay elevated throughout the entire implantation window (days 7-10 after suspected ovulation) to allow for ovulation to be considered \u201chealthy,\u201d meaning the ovulatory event allowed for the best possible chance at conception. Without enough progesterone, it can be more difficult to successfully conceive.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several ways to confirm ovulation, including body basal temperature (BBT) tracking, cycle day 21 progesterone blood tests, and progesterone metabolite (PdG) tracking.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A shift in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proovtest.com\/blogs\/blog\/bbt-pdg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will tell you <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you\u2019ve ovulated, but it falls short of offering any information surrounding post-ovulatory progesterone levels. It\u2019s also easily influenced by factors such as room temperature, poor night\u2019s sleep, snuggling a loved one, or even alcohol consumption.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cycle day 21 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/proovtest.com\/blogs\/blog\/progesterone-interview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progesterone blood test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will give you an accurate progesterone level, but this only shows your levels at that particular point in time. Since progesterone needs to remain elevated for a long enough period of time after ovulation, a one-time blood test doesn\u2019t always accurately represent progesterone levels over the whole implantation window. Plus, serum progesterone can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6427277\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluctuate up to 30 times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in just one day [3].<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PdG tracking, however, offers non-invasive ovulation confirmation via urine testing. After progesterone cycles through the bloodstream, it\u2019s metabolized by the liver into urine. Studies show that progesterone in blood directly correlates to PdG in urine. Using a PdG test, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/proovtest.refr.cc\/naturalwomanhood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Proov,<\/a> on days 7-10 after suspected ovulation, can confirm that healthy ovulation <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31133596\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">did in fact occur<\/a> [4].&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re using a PdG test like Proov, ideally you\u2019ll want to see four positive test results during the testing window to confirm healthy ovulation. Anything less than four positive results may be a sign that PdG (and therefore progesterone) levels aren\u2019t adequately elevated and could be preventing you from successfully conceiving.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-factors-to-address-to-help-naturally-induce-ovulation\"><span id=\"factors-to-address-to-help-naturally-induce-ovulation\">Factors to address to help naturally induce ovulation<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect that your cycles may be anovulatory, consider addressing some of the following factors that may be causing your anovulatory cycles.
