And it definitely is. However, there\u2019s an unspoken belief that a woman is more \u201cfeminine\u201d and \u201cwomanly\u201d if she has an easy and enjoyable pregnancy. There\u2019s also an implicit belief in our society that planning for a natural birth is preferred and the ideal way to give birth. But what isn\u2019t often talked about is the reality that many women have fears associated with becoming pregnant and giving birth and that pregnancy can be, at times, an uncomfortable and sometimes painful experience. In fact,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12051188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one study<\/a> found that almost 80% of the pregnant women surveyed experienced worries and fears related to pregnancy and childbirth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/12051188\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most common fears<\/a> that women have about pregnancy and childbirth concern:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The health and well-being of both the mother and child\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical professionals and their support or lack thereof\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Family life\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cesarean section\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The process of childbirth itself\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Another&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/bmcpregnancychildbirth.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12884-019-2241-7#Sec1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">study<\/a>&nbsp;identified ten main fears that many women experience when thinking about pregnancy and childbirth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fear of not knowing and not being able to plan\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of harm to the baby\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of pain\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of harm during labor or after childbirth\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of having medical decisions made for you and about you\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of not being able to advocate for oneself during labor and childbirth\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of being alone\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear about one\u2019s body being able to successfully give birth\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of a loss of control\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of giving birth without having a specific reason\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These fears can come from many different&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/health\/archive\/2016\/06\/tokophobia\/489206\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sources<\/a> including past personal experiences with pregnancy, pregnancy loss, and childbirth, but it can also come from a personal history of trauma, the experiences and stories from other people, and sometimes irrational fears. For example, you may have watched a documentary describing the birth process in&nbsp;great detail, or heard a story about an acquaintance who had to have an emergency c-section, or about someone who gave birth at home because she couldn\u2019t get to the hospital in time. These stories tend to be more sensational and memorable while the stories of \u201cuneventful\u201d births often fly under the radar and are quickly forgotten.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, because these fears aren\u2019t often talked about in social circles, many women may wonder if they are normal for having fears about getting pregnant and childbirth. They may feel hesitant to bring up their fears to their friends, family, or medical professionals for fear that they will be judged for having those fears. Instead, it might feel like using hormonal birth control is the only way to address these fears through eliminating ovulation and, along with it, the possibility of becoming pregnant. However, this can feel like a situation of catch-22 because using hormonal birth control comes with the risk of<a href=\"https:\/\/natwomanold.wpengine.com\/learn\/problems-with-contraceptives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&nbsp;side effects<\/a>&nbsp;like mood changes, gastrointestinal distress, vitamin deficiencies, and the risk of heart attack, stroke, blood clots, pulmonary embolism, and gallbladder disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-you-do-if-you-really-don-t-want-to-get-pregnant\"><span id=\"what-do-you-do-if-you-really-dont-want-to-get-pregnant\">What do you do if you REALLY don\u2019t want to get pregnant?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Is using birth control the only option for women who have fears about getting pregnant or giving birth? The short answer is that, while it is very normal to have these types of fears, there are more empowering ways women can take charge of their health and manage their fertility without risking the side effects of hormonal birth control. And&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natwomanold.wpengine.com\/learn\/charting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fertility&nbsp;awareness&nbsp;methods<\/a>&nbsp;(FAM) are a great option&nbsp;for preventing pregnancy at effectiveness rates that rival pharmaceutical birth control.&nbsp;The fertility charting app Natural Cycles&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natwomanold.wpengine.com\/fda-natural-cycles-app-fertility-awareness-natural-family-planning-cycle-charting-medical-research-fabm-effectiveness-ratings-08292018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has been approved<\/a>&nbsp;by the FDA as an effective form of birth control.&nbsp;Some women feel less fearful of getting pregnant after learning how to read when their bodies are naturally fertile and infertile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some women have intense fears of becoming pregnant because they cannot imagine having a child at that time or&nbsp;are not feeling secure in their relationship.&nbsp;Others&nbsp;may&nbsp;have a genetic disorder that&nbsp;could&nbsp;be passed down to future children or&nbsp;have had medical complications with past pregnancies,&nbsp;and&nbsp;these might be weighing heavily on&nbsp;their&nbsp;minds. If you are feeling pregnancy fears, remember that it is very normal to experience these fears and that many women do.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-for-those-growing-their-family-nbsp-try-to-let-nbsp-go-of-the-nbsp-perfect-pregnancy\"><span id=\"for-those-growing-their-family-try-to-let-go-of-the-perfect-pregnancy\">For those growing their family,&nbsp;try to let&nbsp;go of the&nbsp;\u201cperfect pregnancy&#8221;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It is very normal to have&nbsp;pregnancy fears&nbsp;on your mind and to want to have a safe and healthy pregnancy.&nbsp;This doesn\u2019t make you any \u201cless\u201d of a woman, especially if it will be your first pregnancy, you\u2019ve experienced infertility or pregnancy loss in the past, you\u2019ve heard \u201chorror\u201d stories from your friends, or you are in an at-risk category.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it is important to let go of the pressure to have a \u201cperfect\u201d pregnancy or to have expectations for what you think your pregnancy&nbsp;should&nbsp;be like. Ask any woman who has been&nbsp;pregnant&nbsp;and she will tell you that it\u2019s important to be flexible and to let go of any artificial pressure to have a \u201cperfect\u201d pregnancy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of focusing on your fears or the pressure of having a perfect pregnancy and childbirth experience, it can be more empowering to focus on understanding how your body works and how you can work with your body to have the best experience. While someone may have reminded you that women have been giving birth to future generations for millennia, taking the time to understand exactly how your body is designed to accomplish the amazing feat of growing another human being is a much more empowering way to tackle your fears than a dismissive platitude.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tokophobia-when-childbirth-and-pregnancy-fears-become-debilitating\"><span id=\"tokophobia-when-childbirth-and-pregnancy-fears-become-debilitating\">Tokophobia: When childbirth and pregnancy fears become debilitating<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare cases, a woman may experience pregnancy fears that are so extreme&nbsp;they&nbsp;cause symptoms of stress that can affect daily functioning,&nbsp;as well as a wish to have a cesarean section (c-section) or&nbsp;avoid pregnancy and childbirth altogether.&nbsp;These symptoms may be signs of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/362\/bmj.k3933\/rr-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rare&nbsp;condition<\/a>&nbsp;known as tokophobia\u2014a pathological dread of childbirth and\/or pregnancy.&nbsp;It&nbsp;is important to remember that normal pregnancy and childbirth fears&nbsp;are&nbsp;common, and&nbsp;they&nbsp;are not debilitating or overwhelming to the same extent as tokophobia.&nbsp;Women who have tokophobia can seek&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nct.org.uk\/pregnancy\/how-you-might-be-feeling\/tokophobia-how-get-over-extreme-fear-giving-birth#:~:text=Treatment%20for%20tokophobia,-Tokophobia%20can%20be&amp;text=Some%20other%20forms%20of%20treatment,Bhatia%20and%20Jhanjee%2C%202012).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">treatment<\/a>&nbsp;in cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, medication, or hypnobirthing techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-help-for-general-pregnancy-fears\"><span id=\"help-for-general-pregnancy-fears\">Help for general pregnancy fears<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you aren\u2019t pregnant yet, starting to chart your cycle using a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natwomanold.wpengine.com\/learn\/natural-birth-control-methods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FAM model<\/a>&nbsp;is a great place to start understanding your body and your&nbsp;fertility.&nbsp;Working with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/natwomanold.wpengine.com\/learn\/get-started\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FAM instructor<\/a>&nbsp;can help you naturally avoid pregnancy by knowing your body\u2019s fertile times. Working with a&nbsp;midwife, doula,&nbsp;can help you expand your understanding of your fertility,&nbsp;what is happening during pregnancy, and how your body is designed to give birth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try not to&nbsp;let your fears prevent you from understanding your body and the amazing things it can do.
