Lorsque les couples qui luttent pour concevoir un enfant s'adressent \u00e0 un centre de traitement de l'infertilit\u00e9, ils ne sont pas seulement des patients qui consultent un m\u00e9decin : ce sont aussi des consommateurs de soins de sant\u00e9 qui s'orientent vers un syst\u00e8me de traitement de l'infertilit\u00e9. une industrie d'un milliard de dollars<\/a>. Trop souvent, ils sont \u00e9galement aspir\u00e9s sur un trottoir roulant con\u00e7u pour les emmener sans effort d'une intervention \u00e0 l'autre, sans s'arr\u00eater pour soigner leur esprit, discerner leurs options ou \u00e9ventuellement fermer leur porte-monnaie. C'est ce qui m'est arriv\u00e9.<\/p>\n

Je dois \u00eatre clair : je pense que la plupart des m\u00e9decins auxquels nous avons parl\u00e9 essayaient sinc\u00e8rement d'aider. C'\u00e9tait particuli\u00e8rement le cas des endocrinologues de la reproduction qui travaillaient dans des h\u00f4pitaux \u00e0 but non lucratif. Ce sont des personnes compatissantes qui ont choisi leur m\u00e9tier parce qu'elles veulent apporter aux familles la plus grande joie imaginable : la parentalit\u00e9 !<\/p>\n

Malheureusement, dans leur domaine, c'est aussi la seule v\u00e9ritable mesure du succ\u00e8s. B\u00e9b\u00e9 ? Mission accomplie ! Pas de b\u00e9b\u00e9 ? C'est l'\u00e9chec. Cette attitude entra\u00eene une cascade de proc\u00e9dures, l'\u00e9quipe soignante passant progressivement de la gu\u00e9rison de la patiente \u00e0 la recherche d'une grossesse. Dans les situations les plus extr\u00eames, plut\u00f4t que de s'avouer vaincus dans la bataille contre l'infertilit\u00e9, les m\u00e9decins peuvent tout simplement contourner le corps bless\u00e9 du patient, ce qui conduit \u00e0 une situation \u00e9trange dans laquelle les \"patients\" ne re\u00e7oivent en fait aucun soin m\u00e9dical - une m\u00e8re porteuse peut porter une grossesse con\u00e7ue avec le mat\u00e9riel g\u00e9n\u00e9tique de deux donneurs anonymes. Par d\u00e9finition, les m\u00e9decins napro sont beaucoup plus enclins \u00e0 accepter que la m\u00e9decine a des limites. \u00c0 mon avis, leurs patients sont davantage soutenus dans leur d\u00e9cision d'arr\u00eater le traitement et de trouver un moyen d'avancer dans la vie d'une famille de deux personnes, tout aussi significative sur le plan cosmique que les vies v\u00e9cues dans des familles de 3 ou de 13 personnes.<\/p>\n

Cela ne veut pas dire qu'il n'y a pas de probl\u00e8mes dans NaProTECHNOLOGIE. De mon point de vue, l'adoption est trop souvent pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e comme une option en cas d'\u00e9chec, alors qu'il s'agit v\u00e9ritablement d'un parcours \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re et non d'un traitement de l'infertilit\u00e9. En m\u00eame temps, alors que la phase la plus aigu\u00eb du d\u00e9sespoir de l'infertilit\u00e9 s'est adoucie, j'en suis venue \u00e0 comprendre les caract\u00e9ristiques probl\u00e9matiques de certaines des \u00e9preuves que nous avons travers\u00e9es. J'ai appris que le fait d'\u00eatre parent ne gu\u00e9rit pas le traumatisme que l'infertilit\u00e9 inflige \u00e0 votre esprit, \u00e0 votre mariage ou \u00e0 votre corps, m\u00eame si un m\u00e9decin sp\u00e9cialiste de la f\u00e9condation in vitro consid\u00e9rerait mon cas comme un succ\u00e8s et passerait simplement au patient suivant. En fait, c'est une erreur de confier le travail de gu\u00e9rison \u00e0 un b\u00e9b\u00e9 - c'est un travail que seuls les professionnels de la sant\u00e9 adultes sont cens\u00e9s faire. Et c'est aussi mon travail en tant que femme infertile.<\/p>\n

Lorsque j'ai l'occasion de parler \u00e0 des couples confront\u00e9s \u00e0 la m\u00eame situation, je leur dis que je ne les jugerai jamais s'ils ont recours \u00e0 la FIV et que j'esp\u00e8re qu'ils tomberont enceintes, quelle que soit la voie qu'ils choisissent. Mais je leur demande aussi de se demander s'ils sont s\u00fbrs que le trottoir roulant m\u00e8ne vraiment leur famille l\u00e0 o\u00f9 ils veulent aller.
