Talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/category\/know-your-body\/reasons-women-need-periods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">periods<\/a> can feel embarrassing or uncomfortable for many people, and periods admittedly come with a level of mess and discomfort that can make them a little hard to celebrate. But new, ongoing research investigating the unique properties of stem cells found in menstrual blood might just give <em>everyone <\/em>cause to celebrate periods. That\u2019s right. Month after month, your body is churning out stem cells that may very well represent the future of medicine, especially for women with endometriosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-stem-cells\"><span id=\"what-are-stem-cells\">What are stem cells?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the cells in your body are what we call <em>differentiated cells<\/em>, like how your skin is made up of skin cells. Stem cells, on the other hand, are <em>undifferentiated<\/em> and able to replicate (multiply) faster and more times than normal cells. Once upon a time, when you were a microscopic blastocyst (just before becoming an embryo)\u2014with cells numbering in the dozens rather than the trillions you would eventually form\u2014<em>all<\/em> of your cells were <em>pluripotent stem cells<\/em>. At that point, they had the potential to become all the cells needed in the human body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an adult, you still have stem cells, but these cells are only <em>multipotent<\/em> because they can only turn into certain types of cells. The most studied and well-known adult stem cells are bone marrow stem cells, and these stem cells can produce different types of blood cells.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A more recent development in stem cell research is <a href=\"https:\/\/stemcell.ucla.edu\/glossary\/induced-pluripotent-stem-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">induced pluripotent stem cells<\/a>, in which multipotent stem cells are reprogrammed to mimic embryonic stem cells (but without the <a href=\"https:\/\/humanlifereview.com\/does-effective-and-ethical-stem-cell-therapy-exist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ethical issues<\/a>). This can allow scientists to produce types of cells they ordinarily wouldn\u2019t be able to with adult stem cells. However, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/bone-marrow-transplant\/in-depth\/stem-cells\/art-20048117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>, this technology is still inefficient, and the scientists can\u2019t always produce the exact type of cell they want.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-menstrual-blood-derived-stem-cells-menscs\"><span id=\"what-are-menstrual-blood-derived-stem-cells-menscs\">What are menstrual blood-derived stem cells (MenSCs)?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Adult stem cells work to replace cells as needed within whatever tissue they reside. However, there is one special type of tissue in the body that doesn\u2019t just need to be maintained over time. Instead, month after month, it must become thicker, stimulate new blood vessel growth, and its cells must undergo a morphological <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/why-women-have-periods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transformation<\/a>. Did you guess? It\u2019s the <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/fam-basics-everything-you-need-to-know-about-your-endometrium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endometrium<\/a>, the lining of the uterus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9856091\/#:~:text=The%20aforementioned%20capacity%20of%20MenSC%20to%20differentiate,a%20variety%20of%20diseases%20in%20regenerative%20medicine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 article<\/a> from the journal <em>Biomedicines<\/em>, which outlined the remarkable characteristics of menstrual blood-derived stem cells (\u201cMenSCs\u201d), the authors note that the replacing power of the endometrium comes from the unique stem cells that create it [1]. Namely, MenSCs can replicate <em>twice as fast<\/em> as bone marrow stem cells, and different kinds of stem cells can be found in the endometrium, meaning MenSCs have the potential to differentiate into many different types of cells. What kinds of cells, you might wonder? Remarkably, these potential differentiations include cells for fat, bone, heart, nerve, respiratory, ovary, liver, pancreatic tissue, and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MenSCs also interact with different immune cells, can help moderate the immune system, and seem to play a role in reducing inflammation [1]. Much of this incredible potential has yet to be explored in further studies, but one of the best parts of using stem cells from menstrual blood is that it\u2019s <em>ridiculously<\/em> easy to get. I mentioned that bone marrow stem cells are currently the best-studied adult stem cell, but bone marrow has to be collected in a painful procedure, usually from the inside of the hip. Menstrual blood-derived stem cells, on the other hand, are regularly dumped in the trash or flushed away!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-big-potential-for-diagnosing-and-treating-endometriosis-with-menscs\"><span id=\"the-big-potential-for-diagnosing-and-treating-endometriosis-with-menscs\">The big potential for diagnosing and treating endometriosis with MenSCs<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it is a common disorder, women with <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/endometriosis-diagnosis-and-treatment-not-birth-control-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endometriosis<\/a> have a notoriously difficult time receiving an accurate diagnosis. Pelvic exams and ultrasounds may not detect endometriosis lesions. And while painful periods are a common experience when it comes to endometriosis, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/5-lesser-known-symptoms-of-endometriosis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other symptoms<\/a> like GI problems, nerve pain, fatigue, pelvic pain, and spotting may be overlooked or mistaken for other diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We know that endometriosis is characterized by endometrial-like tissue invading tissue within (and, in some cases outside of) the pelvis. But it&#8217;s still unclear why this happens, and why endometriosis lesions <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/endometriosis-not-just-painful-period-disease\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">act differently<\/a> than healthy endometrial cells, and why they impact other parts of the body.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-menscs-in-women-with-endometriosis-vs-menscs-in-women-without-endo\"><span id=\"menscs-in-women-with-endometriosis-vs-menscs-in-women-without-endo\">MenSCs in women with endometriosis vs. MenSCs in women without endo<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the aforementioned article on menstrual blood stem cells also describes how MenSCs from women with endometriosis are <em>different<\/em> from MenSCs from women without endometriosis. In women with endometriosis, these stem cells have a different shape, grow differently when incubated, and have different surface markers, all of which could be used to diagnose endometriosis early. Someday, instead of having to undergo pelvic surgery, diagnosis could be as simple as presenting your doctor with a full <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/lets-talk-menstrual-cups-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">menstrual cup<\/a> and having your period blood sent to be examined by a pathologist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers also found that the endometrial stem cells in women with endometriosis could replicate more frequently, were more invasive, survived longer, and expressed genes related to inflammation and recruitment of more blood vessels to sustain the rogue tissue. These characteristics are remarkably similar to those of cancer cells and help explain why endometrial lesions are so different from normal endometrial tissue.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Researchers also found that the endometrial stem cells in women with endometriosis could replicate more frequently, were more invasive, survived longer, and expressed genes related to inflammation and recruitment of more blood vessels to sustain the rogue tissue. These characteristics are remarkably similar to those of cancer cells and help explain why endometrial lesions are so different from normal endometrial tissue.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-stem-cells-as-a-treatment-for-endometriosis\"><span id=\"stem-cells-as-a-treatment-for-endometriosis\">Stem cells as a treatment for endometriosis?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Other research on stem cells has furthered our understanding of the role they play in endometriosis. For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4276151\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 2014 study with mice<\/a> demonstrated that endometriosis lesions could be treated with medicine that inhibited the mechanism by which the lesions recruit more stem cells [2]. Furthermore, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/endocrinology\/articles\/10.3389\/fendo.2023.1158527\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 animal study<\/a> involving adipose (fat cell)-derived stem cells demonstrated that treating mice with healthy stem cells inhibited endometriosis lesions and improved pregnancy outcomes [3]. While more research is needed, there is hope that one day, normal MenSCs could be used to compete with the abnormal MenSCs that sustain endometrial lesions. This would represent a targeted, non-surgical, therapy for endometriosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-besides-endometriosis-what-else-might-menscs-help-treat-nbsp\"><span id=\"besides-endometriosis-what-else-might-menscs-help-treat\">Besides endometriosis, what else might MenSCs help treat?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The cells in your body derive from three original germ layers: ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. The ectoderm gives rise to skin and nerve cells, the endoderm mainly creates the digestive system, and the mesoderm yields everything else. Adult stem cells can differentiate into other cells in their same germ layer, and stem cells from <em>all three<\/em> germ layers have been identified in the endometrium.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means that there is a huge potential for MenSCs to treat disorders, restore normal function, or heal damaged tissue in many different organ systems. Although there is still a need for human studies, animal models have shown that MenSCs can help with various issues, as outlined by <a href=\"https:\/\/stemcellres.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13287-018-1105-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chen, et. al<\/a> including [4]:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improved beta cell production to treat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/scd.2013.0390\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">type 1 diabetes<\/a> in mice [5]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved behavioral outcome following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/10.1089\/scd.2009.0340\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stroke<\/a> in rat models [6]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/1479-5876-6-45\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blood flow<\/a> in limbs with mice with damaged blood vessels [7]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved fertility following <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/s12967-015-0516-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">premature ovarian failure<\/a> mouse models [8]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restored function following <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/stmcls\/article-abstract\/26\/7\/1695\/6402879?redirectedFrom=fulltext&amp;login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">heart attack<\/a> rat models [9]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved liver function in <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/stcltm\/article\/6\/1\/272\/6404698?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">liver disease<\/a> mouse models [10]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved memory in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/molecular-neuroscience\/articles\/10.3389\/fnmol.2018.00140\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>-like mice [11]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved lung healing in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/1422-0067\/18\/4\/689\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acute lung injury<\/a> mouse models [12]<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Improved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/physiology\/articles\/10.3389\/fphys.2018.00464\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wound closure<\/a> in mice compared to control groups [13]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-have-menscs-been-studied-in-humans\"><span id=\"have-menscs-been-studied-in-humans\">Have MenSCs been studied in humans?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What about human studies? A small <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/humrep\/article\/31\/12\/2723\/2730246?login=false\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2016 study<\/a> from China involved using MenSCs to treat seven women with severe Asherman\u2019s syndrome, in which the endometrium is damaged and forms adhesions that contribute to infertility. The patients experienced improved endometrium thickness and one patient in the study achieved pregnancy naturally, with two others conceiving through IVF [14]. Although this was a very small, non-randomized study, the positive results will hopefully warrant further investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-still-have-to-learn-about-menstrual-blood-derived-stem-cells\"><span id=\"what-we-still-have-to-learn-about-menstrual-blood-derived-stem-cells\">What we still have to learn about menstrual blood-derived stem cells<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/stemcellres.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s13287-018-1105-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 overview<\/a> of MenSCs in <em>Stem Cell Research  &amp; Therapy<\/em> highlighted a few conditions that will need to be met before treatment with these promising stem cells is ready for clinical applications [4]. For one, researchers still need to identify how long transplanted MenSCs can last, and what long-term effects there could be on someone receiving this treatment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another issue the article cited is that there has been a wide range of methods used in collecting and studying these cells. Researchers need to determine what the \u201cgold standard\u201d for collection would look like. Furthermore, while early studies have shown that MenSCs have effects on a variety of tissue types, the exact way they interact with different tissues has yet to be further researched and understood [4].&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bottom-line-on-the-potential-of-menstrual-blood-derived-stem-cells-our-bodies-are-amazing\"><span id=\"the-bottom-line-on-the-potential-of-menstrual-blood-derived-stem-cells-our-bodies-are-amazing\">The bottom line on the potential of menstrual blood-derived stem cells: Our bodies are amazing!<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While we already knew that the endometrium, or lining of the womb, is a remarkable tissue for how it prepares the female body to welcome and nurture a new life in pregnancy, research now indicates that this power may extend to healing and restoring life in other ways, too. And, since women who take hormonal birth control continuously&nbsp; (as advocated by those who say it\u2019s safe to<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/stop-your-period-naturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> stop your period <\/a>indefinitely\u2019) <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/how-to-fix-your-irregular-periods-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">don\u2019t have periods<\/a> or even the withdrawal bleeds that they would typically experience during their week of placebo pills, menstrual blood-derived stem cells may help usher in a future in which there are even more reasons to <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/category\/birth-control-issues\/coming-off-the-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ditch birth control<\/a> and embrace normal cycling.
