More recently, hormonal birth control use has&nbsp;also&nbsp;been shown to have an association with depleted levels of&nbsp;vitamin E and the minerals magnesium, selenium, and zinc [2].&nbsp;Studies have also indicated a link between&nbsp;birth control use and&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26658991\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">inflammatory bowel diseases and poor gut health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;[3].&nbsp;Unfortunately, we know&nbsp;from what both&nbsp;patients&nbsp;and&nbsp;doctors&nbsp;are telling us,&nbsp;that&nbsp;a number of&nbsp;women do not hear about&nbsp;many of&nbsp;these risks when prescribed hormonal birth control.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"nutritional-deficiencies-linked-to-blood-clots-depression-and-anemia\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Nutritional deficiencies linked to blood clots, depression, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and anemia<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Should you care if your birth control could deplete your body of a few nutrients, or if it might make you deficient in a handful of vitamins you may never even have heard of? In a word, yes. Researchers are finding that many of the most serious side effects of&nbsp;hormonal birth control use may&nbsp;actually be&nbsp;due to&nbsp;the nutritional deficiencies&nbsp;with which it is linked.&nbsp;For example,&nbsp;low vitamin B6 levels are associated with heightened risk for thromboembolism, otherwise known as blood clots&nbsp;[4].&nbsp;Those clots<\/span> <span data-contrast=\"none\">can cause heart attacks and strokes&nbsp;if they go undetected and are left untreated. Being a smoker, overweight, or having diabetes (or any combination of the three) make a woman\u2019s risk for developing blood clots&nbsp;and&nbsp;subsequent effects like heart attacks and strokes&nbsp;skyrocket if she is also on the birth control&nbsp;pill, and&nbsp;all three of those risk factors (smoking&nbsp;rates,&nbsp;obesity rates, and&nbsp;diabetes rates) are on the rise in young women.&nbsp;Importantly, however, even&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iudalert.com\/2020\/06\/27\/birth-control-is-linked-to-blood-clots-even-for-nonsmokers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">women without these conditions can suffer blood clots<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;due to birth control.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Further<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the nefarious link between Pill use and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2552796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased risk for both depression<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ajp.psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1176\/appi.ajp.2017.17060616?code=ajp-site&amp;journalCode=ajp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suicide<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;that researchers at the University of Copenhagen have diligently uncovered in recent years may also be due (at least in part) to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hormonal birth control\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> link to vitamin B6 deficiency. B6 plays a big role in the body\u2019s production of certain neurotransmitters, including serotonin. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Serotonin is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;a chemical that influences mood, and chronically low levels of serotonin are associated with depression.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">B12 is another important B vitamin in which a woman on&nbsp;birth control&nbsp;may find herself deficient. According to Dr. Bruce&nbsp;Bistrian, chief of clinical nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, if a B12 deficiency is left untreated, \u201cthe deficiency can cause&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/vitamin-b12-deficiency-can-be-sneaky-harmful-201301105780\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">severe neurologic problems and blood diseases.<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d Knowing this, it should be unsurprising that both B6 and B12 deficiencies can also lead to anemia.&nbsp;Anemia is already common enough in&nbsp;women;&nbsp;according to an article on anemia from&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/diseases-and-conditions\/anemia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Harvard&nbsp;Health<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,&nbsp;\u201cabout 12% of women between the ages of 12 and 49 years have at least mild anemia, mostly from iron deficiency caused by blood loss during menstruation.\u201d And while mild anemia isn\u2019t life-threatening, its symptoms (including tiredness, shortness of breath, feeling lightheaded, headaches,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-disease\/skipping-a-beat--the-surprise-of-palpitations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">faster heart rate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;and breathing rate) can&nbsp;greatly impact&nbsp;the daily life and activities of the young women plagued by the condition. The fact that&nbsp;hormonal birth control could potentially make this common problem even worse should be a concern.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"folate-deficiency-and-neural-tube-defects\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Folate deficiency and neural tube defects&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">possibility that the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nutritional deficiencies linked to birth control may have repercussions for more than just the woman on the Pill<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;is also concerning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">or example, f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">olate is&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">yet&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">another B vitamin in which many women on birth&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">control are chronically deficient.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We know that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">f a pregnant woman has a folate deficiency, it can be quite serious for her unborn child, potentially leading to neural tube defects [<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">]. Fortunately, most pregnant women are counseled to take folic acid to prevent such defects, but imagine the woman who is on the Pill, chronically folate deficient, and gets pregnant, and is unaware of either&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;deficiency or&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pregnancy before it\u2019s too late.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"birth-control-depletes-more-than-b-vitamins\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Birth control depletes more than B vitamins<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We know, too,&nbsp;that birth control may deplete women of nutrients beyond&nbsp;B vitamins.&nbsp;As mentioned above, hormonal birth control use is also associated with depletion in&nbsp;vitamins&nbsp;C&nbsp;and E,&nbsp;as well as minerals like magnesium, selenium, and zinc.&nbsp;A 2010&nbsp;study also found that&nbsp;levels of&nbsp;coenzyme&nbsp;q(10), an important antioxidant naturally produced by the body, were significantly lower in women using various forms of birth control compared to non-users, with women on the transdermal patch having the lowest levels of all [6].&nbsp;In fact, the study found that total antioxidant capacity was significantly lower for women on hormonal birth control versus non-users.&nbsp;Considering that&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/healthy-lifestyle\/nutrition-and-healthy-eating\/multimedia\/antioxidants\/sls-20076428#:~:text=Antioxidants%20are%20substances%20that%20may,to%20tobacco%20smoke%20or%20radiation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">antioxidants<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;protect cells against&nbsp;damaging free radicals (compounds linked to serious diseases like&nbsp;cancer and heart disease), this is yet another example of how hormonal birth control can&nbsp;have far-reaching impacts on a&nbsp;woman\u2019s body&nbsp;beyond&nbsp;merely preventing pregnancy.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"subtle-nutritional-deficiencies-can-add-up-over-time\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Subtle nutritional deficiencies can add up over time&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:40,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">More research is needed to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">determine<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> exactly how and why birth control is associated with these vitamin and nutritional deficiencies<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s important to note,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as well<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, that for many women on birth control<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;these effects&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">may be subtle<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
