Whether it\u2019s pre, peri, or simply just menopause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of when the ovary releases the final egg, cycles make a major shift around the mid-thirties, leading to a large drop in fertility after age 35 (generally speaking, as every woman is different). De-regulation of cycles\u2014and the ultimate cessation of them (menopause)\u2014can be a decade-long process. The following are a few key points women in their late thirties and forties can keep in mind to protect their future health, and make for a smoother transition into menopause.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"what-changes-for-womens-cycles-and-fertility-after-35\"><strong>What changes for women\u2019s cycles and fertility after 35?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of your ovary\u00a0 as a bag of popcorn. When you first put it in the microwave, there is nothing. Think of that as the time before puberty. Then the popcorn starts to pop &#8211; hormones wake up, but not necessarily at a regular rate. Then in your twenties the popcorn is at peak height of regularity and is generally copious. Pops everywhere. But as time goes on, the popcorn pops space out a little more and become less regular. This is called premenopause, which can take up to 10 years! The final, feeble pops are perimenopause, which is usually the final year or two before menopause, when eventually, no more pieces of popcorn remain to pop.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During pre and peri menopause, there tends to be a little more space between the \u201cpops\u201d (eggs being released) and some months there simply isn\u2019t a pop (called an anovulatory cycle). Because of this, estrogen tends to take a more dominant seat. Estrogen is a necessary hormone that follicles pump out as they grow in the ovary during the ovulatory, or fertile, time. The longer it takes to ovulate, the longer the exposure to estrogen. And the only thing that can counter balance estrogen is progesterone, the post ovulatory hormone. Unfortunately, shortened post ovulatory phases are often the first part of cycle de-regulation. Therefore there simply isn\u2019t enough progesterone to counter the higher levels of estrogen. So what\u2019s a woman to do? Here are the 3 most important things you can do today to make your transition through pre, peri, and menopause a little smoother, and successfully navigate your fertility after 35.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"put-your-best-foot-forward-when-it-comes-to-your-health\"><b>Put your best foot forward when it comes to your health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women over 35 navigating their cycles can benefit from considering the following changes: lifestyle and nutrition changes, fertility support (for those who need it), and medical support. Mid-thirties cycle changes are more or less a given, but the disruptions they can cause in your well-being don&#8217;t have to be.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"lifestyle-and-nutrition-changes\"><b>Lifestyle and nutrition changes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Veggies<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have always been important, but at this stage, they are even more important. There are major estrogen receptors in the GI tract, so if your diet doesn\u2019t contain enough fiber to break down and move stools, there will be excess estrogen sitting around in your bowels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Cardio and Strength training<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> even just 3 hours a week can decrease estrogen levels. Research shows that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fredhutch.org\/en\/news\/center-news\/2004\/05\/excercise.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise can increase levels of a protein called sex hormone-binding globulin that binds up free-estrogen in the serum.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> You don\u2019t need a gym membership if that feels overwhelming to you. You can buy some dumbbells or stretch bands and find some great YouTube workout videos from the comfort of your own home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Decrease stress levels <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(aka decrease cortisol, which competes with progesterone\u2014which is the only hormone that can \u201cbalance\u201d estrogen). If you haven\u2019t already, try taking up some form of meditation\/prayer\/mindfulness which can be a powerful piece of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/mindfulness-meditation-may-ease-anxiety-mental-stress-201401086967\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lowering stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can join a local group or try it at home on your own.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"consider-your-family-planning-wishes\"><b>Consider your Family-Planning Wishes<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Average U.S. maternal ages have been rising since the 1980s. Many women in their late thirties are just starting to try to conceive at this point. Menopause is just about the last thing a woman wants to hear about when she\u2019s anxious to start a chapter of motherhood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If achieving pregnancy is proving to be difficult, try working with a handful of practitioners who are experienced in the pre-menopause years. (Can we please get a better name for this season?) This can include acupuncturists, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/learn\/get-started\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility awareness instructors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/learn\/get-started\/#find-doctor\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical management physicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who are fluent in fertility charting and its implications. IVF, which is the common solution in this situation, can exacerbate premenopause symptoms and even lead to problems with post-menopausal health. (1)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make peace with the changes that will likely arise in your fertility after 35. If you always thought you wanted \u201cone more kid,\u201d this is the time to think critically about those expectations and make peace with your reality. It\u2019s a lot easier to make decisions now; after cycles cease it will be too late.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"get-medical-advice-and-support\"><b>Get Medical Advice and Support\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many practitioners tout the use of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3987489\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bio-identical progesterone creams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I can only recommend this under the supervision of medical care, but it\u2019s worth asking your doctor about it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find your \u201cpremenopausal team\u201d (okay, maybe we can call it the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wise woman team<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?). Utilize herbalists, counselors, and other practitioners who make you feel comfortable and cared for. If anyone tells you, \u201cThis is just how it is,\u201d and you aren\u2019t satisfied, now is the time to say, \u201cI\u2019m moving on.\u201d You decide your care!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you may feel overwhelmed by all this \u201cmenopause business\u201d there is no better time than the present to take charge of your health and wellness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Perimenopause\"><b><strong class=\"None headword\" lang=\"mul\">\u00b9<\/strong>Perimenopausal<\/b><\/a><b> changes are similar to changes caused by some<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Infertility\"> <b>infertility<\/b><\/a><b> treatments.<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#In_vitro_fertilization_IVF\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In vitro fertilization (IVF)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requires laparoscopic surgery (through a small tube in the abdomen) to suck up ovarian egg cells that are nearly ready to ovulate so they can be grown and fertilized in a laboratory and then injected into the woman\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Uterus\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uterus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In order to collect the maximum number of eggs,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Gynecologist\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gynecologist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s override<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Inhibin\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> using a technique called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovarian hyper-stimulation.\u201d The woman is given daily injections of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#FSH\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FSH<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> until many<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Follicle\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follicle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s have been stimulated and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cemcor.ca\/resources\/glossary#Estrogen\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estrogen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> levels are very high.
