{"id":22467,"date":"2025-04-10T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/?p=22467"},"modified":"2025-04-15T20:39:33","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T01:39:33","slug":"alteradores-endocrinos-quimicos-fertilidad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/es\/endocrine-disrupting-chemical-fertility\/","title":{"rendered":"Sustancias qu\u00edmicas alteradoras endocrinas: \u00bfC\u00f3mo afectan a la fertilidad masculina?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An estimated 1 in 6 people suffer from infertility\u2014the inability to conceive after a minimum of 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse\u2014worldwide, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iris.who.int\/bitstream\/handle\/10665\/366700\/9789240068315-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>. Historically, the burden of infertility has overwhelmingly been placed on women; however, researchers are becoming increasingly aware that often <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/low-sperm-counts-male-fertility-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>both<\/em> male and female factors <\/a>contribute to infertility. Here, let\u2019s explore the effect exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) may be having on male fertility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-we-measure-male-fertility\"><span id=\"how-do-we-measure-male-fertility\">How do we measure male fertility?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve previously shared the impact of sperm quality, quantity, and motility on male fertility, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/low-sperm-counts-male-fertility-crisis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here<\/a>.&nbsp; To assess sperm health, specialists will look at sperm shape (e.g., do the sperm have a long tail and oval-shaped head?) plus motility (i.e., their ability to travel from the testicles through the penis, and later through the woman\u2019s vagina, cervix, and fallopian tubes) plus count (the number of normal sperm present). While estimates vary, a sperm count of 20 million sperm per millimeter of semen or higher is considered sufficient to ensure that enough sperm can survive the acidic environment of a woman\u2019s vagina to make conception possible [1]. A lower sperm count is consistent with decreased fertility. However, because it only takes <em>one<\/em> sperm for pregnancy to occur, a low sperm count does not mean pregnancy is impossible\u2014just less likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/why-is-male-reproductive-health-declining\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> previously discussed<\/a> how multiple studies since the 1990s have found demonstrable decreases in sperm counts and those declines continue to this day [1]. Additionally, male reproductive diseases which can lead to infertility, such as testicular cancer, are on the rise across Western countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals\"><span id=\"what-are-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals\">What are endocrine-disrupting chemicals?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As defined by this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/public-health\/articles\/10.3389\/fpubh.2023.1232646\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 research review<\/a>, an endocrine disruptor is \u201ca chemical substance that can interfere with the functioning of the endocrine system of humans or animals and cause adverse health effects in an organism or its progeny\u201d [2].&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basically, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/simple-ways-to-protect-your-health-and-fertility-from-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">endocrine disruptors<\/a> are chemicals that imitate our natural hormones, primarily our sex hormones, including estrogen. Because our sex hormones affect every system in our body, these \u201cfake\u201d hormones consequently affect our whole bodies, potentially sending confusing signals and adversely <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/plastics-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affecting<\/a> our fertility, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10598475\/#:~:text=In%20the%20context%20of%20male,linked%20to%20reduced%20sperm%20quality%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">development,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC5761609\/#:~:text=Exposure%20to%20EDCs%20has%20been,diseases%20(33%E2%80%9336).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immunity<\/a>, and overall health and well-being. Furthermore, \u201cthese effects may occur at very low doses\u201d [2][3]. The estrogenic effects of some endocrine-disrupting chemicals (endocrine disruptors that function this way are called xenoestrogens) may be particularly damaging to male fertility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can be <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/protecting-boys-from-feminizing-chemicals-male-endocrine-disruptors\/\">found<\/a> in plastics, food packaging, beauty and hygiene products, pesticides, flooring, paint, toys, and cleaning products, just to name a few common sources. Some common EDCs include phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), pesticides, and parabens. Importantly, as the 2023 research review found, \u201cIn some cases, the effects may be reversible if exposure to the EDC is stopped, but in other cases, the effects may be permanent\u201d [2].&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-might-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals-be-connected-to-male-infertility\"><span id=\"how-might-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals-be-connected-to-male-infertility\">How might endocrine-disrupting chemicals be connected to male infertility?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Endocrine-disrupting chemical <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10598475\/#:~:text=In%20the%20context%20of%20male,linked%20to%20reduced%20sperm%20quality%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exposure<\/a> may contribute to male infertility in several ways [4]. EDC exposure can impact testicular development, sperm count, quality, motility, and DNA integrity. However, as <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6425478\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this 2019 review<\/a> explains, more research needs to be done to confirm the extent of the effects of specific endocrine-disrupting chemicals, because there are multiple categories of EDCs and different studies have reached different conclusions [4]. Let\u2019s look at what we know specifically about phthalate, BPA, pesticide, and paraben exposure in relation to male infertility.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phthalates\"><span id=\"phthalates\">Phthalates<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Phthalates, also known as plasticizers, are manufactured chemicals<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/protecting-boys-from-feminizing-chemicals-male-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> found<\/a> in plastics, sealants, shower curtains, vinyl flooring, hygiene and cleaning products, and makeup. Because plastic is often used for food packaging, it can be found in many foods and drinks. We have previously written on phthalates\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/phthalates-preterm-birth-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> in-utero<\/a> effects. For unborn males specifically, phthalate exposure has been demonstrated to affect<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/simple-ways-to-protect-your-health-and-fertility-from-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> testicular development<\/a>. However, it is important to note that phthalates are just as harmful for males of all ages. Phthalate exposure has been associated with poor<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6425478\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> semen quality<\/a> and an increased risk for<a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/protecting-boys-from-feminizing-chemicals-male-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> testicular cancer<\/a>, though researchers have not established how much is too much exposure [4].\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of note, some occupations expose adult males to high amounts of phthalates. An example of this is firefighting, as firefighter gear and flame retardant foam contain phthalates. Because phthalate absorption increases with heat and exercise, firefighters&#8217; increased risk of testicular, prostate, and other cancers is unsurprising, though very concerning [5]. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bpa\"><span id=\"bpa\">BPA<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>BPA stands for Bisphenol A. It is another <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6425478\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chemical<\/a> frequently found in plastics [4]. It is also used in household products, aluminum cans, medical supplies, and dental sealants. <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/protecting-boys-from-feminizing-chemicals-male-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BPA exposure<\/a> is higher when BPA-containing products, such as food containers, are heated. BPA exposure is associated with decreased sperm count, motility, and quality [4].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pesticides\"><span id=\"pesticides\">Pesticides<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pesticides are chemicals that include herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides. They are used to kill bugs, bacteria, and other \u201cpests.\u201d Pesticides are frequently used in all phases of food production and are a major worldwide concern. We come into contact with pesticides through our food, water, and air and ground pollution, to name a few areas. Pesticides have been associated with lowered sperm count, reduced motility, and abnormal morphology, meaning that the appearance of the sperm under a microscope is abnormal [4].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-parabens\"><span id=\"parabens\">Parabens<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Parabens are preservatives often found in hygiene products like deodorant, beard balms, and cologne. They are also used in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/research\/propyl-paraben\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">processed food<\/a>s like store-bought bread products. Paraben <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6425478\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exposure<\/a> is associated with lower pregnancy outcomes in couples trying to conceive, but more research is needed to clarify the specific areas of the endocrine system that parabens affect [4].&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-can-men-do-to-reduce-edc-exposure\"><span id=\"what-can-men-do-to-reduce-edc-exposure\">What can men do to reduce EDC exposure?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EDCs are everywhere, and it can feel like too great a task to escape their effects. The good news is that there are always ways to limit one\u2019s exposure. Here are some basic ways to reduce your exposure to EDCs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/3-simple-tips-to-limit-endocrine-disruptors-and-balance-hormones-naturally\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Filter your water<\/a> with a reverse osmosis filtration system to remove <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/birth-control-in-water-supply\/#:~:text=But%20getting%20traces%20of%20birth,to%20filter%20out%20some%20drugs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birth control pill residue and other estrogens found in tap water<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switch out your <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/plastics-endocrine-disruptors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plastic<\/a> containers, including disposable plastic water bottles, to glass or stainless steel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/phthalates-preterm-birth-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">microwaving<\/a> your plastic containers, as exposure to heat increases phthalate and BPA release.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose clothing made of natural fibers like cotton and linen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wash your fruits and vegetables and choose organic foods when possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check containers for labels saying BPA free, Paraben free, and Pthalate free.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid scented skin care products, shampoo, beard balms, and cologne, including products with ingredients that simply read \u2018fragrance\u2019 or \u2018parfum.\u2019<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-bottom-line-on-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals-and-male-fertility\"><span id=\"the-bottom-line-on-endocrine-disrupting-chemicals-and-male-fertility\">The bottom line on endocrine-disrupting chemicals and male fertility<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We often talk about how the female reproductive system affects every area of a woman\u2019s health, but how often do we think about how men\u2019s reproductive hormones affect every area of male health? Men may not have a hormonal cycle that can be seen through a chart, but their hormones are still serving important functions in their bodies, and it is important that we take care of them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10598475\/#:~:text=In%20the%20context%20of%20male,linked%20to%20reduced%20sperm%20quality%2C\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Limiting<\/a> exposure to EDCs is one way men can take better care of their reproductive and endocrine systems, and thus, care for their overall health.
