She graduated high school early and had already begun college classes, with hopes of eventually getting into Oxford University.&nbsp;According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/hqwbw8-layla\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GoFundMe<\/a> page launched by her cousin, Alicia Binns, \u201c[Layla] started college this year and just in 3 short months had made so many new friends. Some of her closer friendships made her more outgoing than ever, and she was also finding love in a new relationship. She started working for the first time, and even at work, she made some close bonds.\u201d Doors were really opening for Khan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with the other big changes in her life, she sought to address the debilitating period pain she\u2019d suffered for years. Her doctor prescribed the Pill. Having heard multiple friends say that birth control had alleviated their period symptoms, Khan took her first pill on November 25th, 2023. Initially, the birth control seemed to do exactly what it was supposed to. Binns wrote, \u201cshe was pleased that [the pills] had very quickly helped with an issue she has had to put up with for such a long time.\u201d The first clue that something wasn\u2019t right came just 10 days later.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-doctors-assumed-a-stomach-bug-not-birth-control-was-the-cause-if-severe-vomiting\"><span id=\"doctors-assumed-a-stomach-bug-not-birth-control-was-the-cause-of-severe-vomiting\">Doctors assumed a stomach bug, not birth control, was the cause of severe vomiting<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 5th, Khan began to experience migraines, a known potential side effect of hormonal birth control, per the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/chronic-daily-headaches\/in-depth\/headaches\/art-20046729#:~:text=While%20birth%20control%20can%20help,if%20this%20happens%20to%20you.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mayo Clinic<\/a>. Three days later, the migraines had<a href=\"https:\/\/www.examinerlive.co.uk\/news\/local-news\/girl-16-dies-blood-clot-28307176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> intensified<\/a> so much that she began vomiting. When Khan was no better two days later, her parents called the 111 hotline for Great Britain\u2019s National Health Service. But the call screener assured the distressed parents that Layla\u2019s symptoms were not concerning and advised them to call her primary care doctor in the morning. At the doctor visit the following day, during which Khan threw up more than once, she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/health\/contraceptive-pill-blood-clot-period-pains-teenager-death-layla-b1127719.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">misdiagnosed<\/a> as having a stomach bug and sent home with a prescription for anti-nausea medication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same night, Khan\u2019s mother heard the teen \u201cscreaming in agony\u201d in her bed.&nbsp; Unable to reach the primary care doctor by phone, Khan\u2019s parents took her to the nearest emergency room. When Khan attempted to use the bathroom before they left, she collapsed on the ground, unable to walk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[A]fter a great deal of time\u201d at the hospital, staff discovered that Khan had a blood clot in her brain. The clot caused such terrible swelling that just two days later she was declared brain dead. Layla Khan was removed from life support on December 13th, 2023, and her family donated her organs in order to \u201csave five other people&#8217;s lives before Christmas.\u201d She left behind four younger siblings, including twin brothers less than a year old.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-young-women-also-died-from-blood-clots-connected-to-their-birth-control-nbsp\"><span id=\"other-young-women-also-died-from-blood-clots-connected-to-their-birth-control\">Other young women also died from blood clots connected to their birth control&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tragically, Khan isn\u2019t the first young woman to die of a blood clot known or suspected to have been caused by hormonal birth control. The GoFundMe doesn\u2019t explicitly state whether Layla Khan had any health conditions, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rush.edu\/news\/why-birth-control-and-migraines-aura-dont-mix\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">migraines with aura,<\/a> that could drastically increase her chances of suffering a blood clot from her birth control. Based on her cousin\u2019s description of her school, work, and lifestyle, she was presumably healthy and active. But, as <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/teen-birth-control-side-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previously reported<\/a> by Natural Womanhood, so were Hope Johnson, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/remembering-alexandra-williams-one-year-after-her-death-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexandra Williams<\/a>, Julia West-Ross, <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/remember-erika-langhart-victim-of-the-nuvaring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Erika Langhart<\/a>, Brittany Malone, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2019\/03\/49896\/#:~:text=Bioethics%2C%20Healthcare%2C%20Sexuality-,Birth%20Control%2C%20Blood%20Clots%2C%20and%20Untimely%20Death%3A%20Time%20to,What%20We%20Tell%20Our%20Teens%3F&amp;text=By%20increasing%20the%20risk%20of,forty%2Dfive%20people%20in%202017.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alex Rowan<\/a>. Each young woman died from birth control-related blood clots.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-many-teens-or-young-women-suffer-birth-control-related-blood-clots-each-year-nbsp\"><span id=\"how-many-teens-or-young-women-suffer-birth-control-related-blood-clots-each-year\">How many teens or young women suffer birth control-related blood clots each year?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stoptheclot.org\/learn_more\/womens_health_faq\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Blood Clot Alliance<\/a>, the likelihood of an adult woman experiencing a blood clot each year of hormonal birth control use is low, just 1 in 3,000. Healthy teen girls, who have lower risks of blood clots than adult women in general, should be even less likely to experience a clot. But, like Layla Khan, <em>millions<\/em> of teens and adult women take hormonal contraception each year. Some of these girls and women will be impacted by a blood clot, which can lodge in a leg or lung or in the heart or brain.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A fraction of those clots will be fatal. The researchers behind a 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0024363918816683\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">systematic review of literature<\/a> on blood clot, stroke, and heart attack risk due to birth control in young women ages 15-24 stated ,\u201cThe risks found would project 300\u2013400 women dying from using [hormonal contraception] each year in the United States\u201d [1].&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-options-do-girls-or-adult-women-have-for-period-pain-and-other-reproductive-health-issues-nbsp\"><span id=\"what-options-do-girls-or-adult-women-have-for-period-pain-and-other-reproductive-health-issues\">What options do girls or adult women have for period pain and other reproductive health issues?&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>300-400 deaths each year from birth control is a sobering statistic, especially because these young women should have had their whole lives ahead of them. Women and girls deserve better, and, fortunately, better options do exist. A teen girl who learns to track her menstrual cycle and chart biomarkers like cervical mucus, basal body temperature (BBT), or urinary hormone levels accumulates a wealth of personal health data that reflects her whole body \u2014not just her reproductive\u2014health.
