As we all know, condoms are a form of birth control.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They are also billed as being essential to \u201csafe sex,\u201d in that they\u00a0can be protective against the transmission of certain STDs (although\u00a0it should be noted that they are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/condomeffectiveness\/brief.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">not equally effective<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0against all types of STDs).\u00a0However, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hen compared to other forms of contraception, condoms are surprisingly ineffective (the CDC reports\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/reproductivehealth\/contraception\/index.htm?CDC_AA_refVal=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cdc.gov%2Freproductivehealth%2Funintendedpregnancy%2Fcontraception.htm#Contraceptive-Effectiveness\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">typical use failure rate of 13%<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">[<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">].<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Still<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d regularly and as directed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(perfect use rates\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are as high as\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/323089#are-condoms-safe\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">98%<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">condoms can<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">prevent pregnancy\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">more often than not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">; i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">f a woman happens to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have sex on a day when she is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fertile, condoms can lessen the likelihood of pregnancy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Condoms\u00a0are\u00a0also\u00a0free of the health risks associated with\u00a0the various forms of\u00a0hormonal\u00a0birth control\u00a0pills\u00a0or\u00a0the\u00a0risks related to other birth control devices like IUDs, implants, or patches.\u00a0For this reason,\u00a0some couples looking for\u00a0hormone-free birth control may\u00a0choose to\u00a0use\u00a0what\u2019s known in the medical community as Fertility Awareness-Based Methods (FABM),\u00a0more informally called fertility awareness methods (FAM) or natural family planning (NFP). Some couples who use\u00a0a fertility awareness method,\u00a0choose to\u00a0\u201csupplement\u201d their method by using\u00a0 condoms every time they have sex, or\u00a0especially\u00a0during\u00a0periods\u00a0of\u00a0heightened\u00a0fertility (rather than abstaining from sex during that time, as most fertility awareness methods advise).<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the surface, this seems to make sense, right? After all,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ince condoms are another method of preventing pregnancy, wouldn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using condoms in addition to a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fertility awareness method<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">exponentially decrease your likelihood of achieving pregnancy?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> As it turns out, the answer could be a resounding \u201cnope.\u201d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"pairing-condoms-with-a-fertility-awareness-method-could-make-the-method-less-effective\" aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">P<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">airing condoms with a fertility awareness method\u00a0<\/span>could make<span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the method less effective\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Although it may\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">seem\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">counterintuitive, using condoms with\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fertility awareness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">method could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/condoms-barriers-use-learning-fertility-awareness-fabms-2020\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">actually reduce<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the FABM&#8217;s effectiveness rate<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Couples who use\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fertility awareness<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> know when the woman is going through the fertile part of her cycle and can <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most effectively\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">avoid pregnancy by abstaining during that time. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ome of these couples choose to use condoms (or another barrier method),<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">while having sex <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during fertile times<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, rather than abstaining<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0condom-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">using couples <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">who learn FAM\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">appreciate<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">know<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0when t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hey\u2019re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">infertile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">know when they can pass on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0condom.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> here\u2019s the crux of the matter: Should a couple choose to use a condom in combination with a FAM, the typical use rate of success in avoiding pregnancy is, at best, only as good as that of the condom (which again, is about 87% with typical use). This is despite the higher efficacy of the fertility awareness methods.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0In\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">words<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, your success rate is only as good as that of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">least effective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">method you are using, like a chain with one weak link.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When couples using a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0fertility awareness method\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">choose to have intercourse with a condom during the woman\u2019s fertile time, they are having sex with a far less effective family planning method at the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0exact<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time when she is most likely to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0get pregnant. During that period, any intercourse has a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">heightened<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0risk<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of resulting in pregnancy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">therefore\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any failure of the condom\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">could<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0result in pregnancy.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/guide-to-the-effectiveness-of-fertility-awareness-based-methods-natural-family-planning-does-it-work\/\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">impressive effectiveness rates<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0of fertility awareness methods<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">which can be as high as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">99%<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for some methods<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0are wholly\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">dependent on\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">abstinence during the fertile times<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014that is, not having sex when pregnancy is most likely to happen<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Therefore, when <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">you combine a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fertility awareness method\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with a barrier method <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">during sex in times of fertility<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, you are stuck with the barrier method&#8217;s low<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">er<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0effectiveness rate.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a result, you<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> could completely lose the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">higher <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">effectiveness of the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">fertility awareness method if you use it in conjunction with a condom. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Toni Weschler puts it best in her book\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taking Charge of Your Fertility<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: <\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Because the fertile phase is the only time in the cycle in which you can possibly get pregnant, this is the time when abstinence is necessary if you&#8217;re determined to avoid a pregnancy<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If a condom is going to fail, this is the time it would really matter!&#8221;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0[<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">]<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>One high-quality study found similar pregnancy rates for couples who occasionally use barrier method, mainly condoms, during the fertile time as compared to couples who were abstinent. However, the study authors note that &#8220;there were very few pregnancies in the two samples. We therefore barely had enough statistical power to evaluate the multivariate and adjusted effect of barrier methods for avoiding a pregnancy.&#8221; The authors also posited that couples using both the German Sympto-thermal method (the FABM evaluated by the study) may have been engaging in something called &#8220;conscious intelligent risk taking, i.e. no unprotected intercourse during the few highly fertile days, and intercourse only occurred on days at the beginning and end of the fertile time that would be considered to be a relatively low fertile time.&#8221; [4]. More studies are needed to evaluate the effect of condoms on the efficacy rates of fertility awareness methods.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-unexpected-benefits-of-ditching-condoms\" aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The unexpected benefits of d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">itching condoms<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Whether or not pregnancy prevention rates are the same for fertility awareness alone, or fertility awareness with condoms, there are other benefits for couples who want to go condom-free. In addition to reaping the benefits of high efficacy in pregnancy prevention offered by fertility awareness methods, couples who say a thorough \u201cgoodbye!\u201d to condoms may experience some other surprising benefits. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK279008\/table\/benign-prstate-dsrdr.colourwhit\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Semen contains<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> an entire host of beneficial vitamins, minerals, and other compounds, including <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">zinc, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ascorbic acid<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(Vitamin C)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, blood-group antigens, calcium, chlorine, cholesterol, choline, citric acid, creatine, fructose, glutathione, lactic acid, magnesium, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, sorbitol, and vitamin B12<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It has long been known that the vagina<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0absorbs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">many of these<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0seminal components<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> [5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">]<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and as it happens,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">any of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0known to be beneficial to a woman\u2019s reproductive\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">health<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The\u00a0benefits of\u00a0vaginally absorbed\u00a0semen\u00a0may\u00a0also extend beyond the physical.\u00a0Semen contains many mood-elevating compounds such as endorphins, estrone, prolactin,\u00a0oxytocin,\u00a0thyrotropin-releasing hormone, and serotonin, leading to theories that semen might be a natural \u201cmood-booster.\u201d\u00a0One famous\u00a0study from\u00a02002 found\u00a0some evidence to support that theory: women who had\u00a0condomless\u00a0sex\u00a0exhibited\u00a0fewer\u00a0depressive symptoms than women who had\u00a0sex with condoms [6].\u00a0The presence of oxytocin, the so-called \u201cbonding hormone\u201d\u00a0(as well as other hormones)\u00a0has led to theories that\u00a0seminal\u00a0absorption binds the couple to each other more fully. In a similar vein, research has found that men and women find sex more pleasurable without the use of condoms [7], and studies have shown a correlation between sexual satisfaction and marital satisfaction [8].
